GTA 6 is almost upon us. After a decade of waiting, GTA 6 is finally making it to our PCs in Fall, 2025. While we are so excited to see the game ourselves, let’s try not to deny how excited we are to play it with mods! GTA has a huge community of mod developers around it. This Modding community has been building up and expanding over the years that it even came to a point where Take-Two Interactive could not even deny modding has indeed become a huge part of their beloved gaming franchise GTA.
Rockstar Games bittersweet relationship with Mods in the Past
Whether you are a developer or someone who genuinely enjoys playing with mods, or perhaps you are someone who likes playing vanilla, it’s clear to anyone and everyone that Rockstar Games does not have the best relationship with Mods in general. It has always been discouraged widely from Rockstar games to play with mods, especially when it comes to playing online. People who play with mods often know how much effort is put into avoiding anti-cheat systems in GTA to avoid getting caught and having to face the consequences. Several incidents from the past hold true to this negative attitude from Rockstar Games. Especially when they tracked down and taken down specific mods and mod menus related to GTA 5 in the past years.
Rockstar with the FiveM Incident
One of the most popular and widely talked about incidents regarding mods and how Rockstar Games deals with them is the FiveM incident. FiveM is a highly customizable mod framework that allows players to create and play on multiple servers ranging from mods to vehicles to weapons. While FiveM was indeed one of the most popular mods of the decade among GTA 5 players, Rockstar Games certainly did not receive this attention well.
Rockstar Games took things serious this time and ended up banning the entire team of FiveM, Cfx.re in 2015. Which resulted in years of legal suite and a cold war between the modding community and Rockstar Games. However, in 2023 something that no one had expected happened! Rockstar Games acquired the entire team of Cfx.re along with their products FiveM and RedM. Which marked a significant event and a peace event between Rockstar Games and the Modding Community.
Rockstar Games relationship with Mods takes a dramatic turn
While Rockstar Games themselves did not announce anything regarding mods after this incident, It is speculated as a change in attitudes towards Mods by the Modding Community. Most of us think this can mean Rockstar Games will even support modding in their future games. Adding more to this, the most recent public talk of Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive seems to also exude a positive take on modding. According to PC Games Insider, Zelnick was spotted answering a question about the publisher’s opinion about modding as follows, “We have been very open-minded, and we are certainly excited about many things that our users are delivering in their engagement with our titles and other people’s titles.” This gives a clear sign as to how much Rockstar Games’ attitude toward modding has changed after all. As for us who are in love with mods, this clearly marks a positive benchmark.
What can we expect as the GTA 6 Modding Community?
It’s clear that Rockstar Games holds a more open-minded attitude towards mods now. This could be due to the overwhelming demand and the increase of mods. This could open up loads of opportunities. As community forums suggest, we can genuinely expect more user-generated content to be incorporated into GTA 6. This could even mean features like Roleplaying which could be played online with GTA 6.
Setting aside what might be incorporated into GTA 6 from User Generated Content, This change will definitely result in Creative freedom for Mod developers. Which will also result in building a more dynamic and stable modding community around GTA 6 in the future. As of now, it seems things are looking pretty exciting and prospective for the Modding Community. So if you love mods, GTA 6 might be your game indeed! Make sure to follow us though, cause we will be the first to bring the best of GTA 6 mods to you!
